Dear Ivan, Eileen, Deva
My sincere condolences on the passing of our dear Aunty. I cannot imagine your grief at this time, at the passing of a sweet, faith-filled pillar of our families.
Because of the long friendship of our parents, that began in school in Sri Lanka, for both our parents and continued for decades after, in Zambia, Central Africa, and Toronto, Aunty is firmly established as a constant, in my memory. I have such fond memories of my childhood visits to your home in Kitwe, Zambia, and Aunty at the helm of a bustling kitchen that produced very tasty treats like her legendary jam tarts and mince pies! In those days, as indeed, whenever we visited you all in Toronto, Aunty's hospitality was legendary... and her table runneth over with goodies, and the home, with love, prayers and great communications and stories.
As I grew older I got the strong sense that Aunty had two great loves - her God and her family, and she worked hard for both. I recall that at least every sixth word out of her mouth, was a prayer to God, Mother Mary or one of the Saints, to prove the point of whatever story she was telling. From this I learned that she praised God for every good thing she received, and sought His help, for every struggle she faced in her life.
My mother was best friends with Aunty. Their friendship was legendary. They talked to each other daily for almost 25 years, and prayed together, exchanging the latest prayers and novenas they had learned about - as every continent brings its own devotions. No doubt, they also exchanged the latest gossip within their circles.... or "the tea" as their grandchildren would probably say today - their circles were extensive, extending back to their school days.
Aunty, You showed by your whole life, your faith in Jesus Christ, who said, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” I know that He welcomed you with the following words we all long to hear: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Matthew 25:23)
I pray for all of you in this difficult time, that you may be strengthened with the "peace that surpasses all understanding". (Phil 4:6). Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her, may she rest in peace, Amen.
