(September 28, 1935 - February 9, 2022)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Anthony Gene Benito De Silva, at Michael Garron Hospital.

Benito or “Tony” as he was fondly known by his family, friends and colleagues, is predeceased by his loving parents, Walter and Etta De Silva and his infant son, Glen.  He is deeply missed by Annette, his loving wife of 58 years, children Gavin (Erika), Diane (Roy) and grandchildren Nicolas, Marisa, Michael and Victor, whom he cared for immeasurably.

His brothers and sisters, Therese (Jay), Gerard (Junie), Clementine (Sumith), Eugene (Madonna) and Jerome, are forever grateful for his love, guidance and devotion to their family, since their father’s early passing.

He is in the hearts of his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, who were dear to him.

Benito was born in Colombo Sri Lanka and was educated at one of the leading schools, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, where he excelled in athletics,  swimming, cricket and field hockey.  He was in the volunteer force of the Ceylon Army Service Corporation, worked at Carson Cumberbatch Company and at the Insurance Corporation of Sri Lanka, before his immigration to Canada with his family.

On arrival in Canada in 1973, he joined the Metro Toronto Police Department.  He was assigned to the Summons Bureau where he worked until he joined the Courts Bureau as a Court Security Officer.  He served the Police Force diligently for 32 years.  His colleagues described him as a conscientious, dependable and a professional individual, with a pleasant demeanor, unforgettable personality and warm smile.  He always had time for a quick-witted joke.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Ave Maria Council of The Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Scarborough and was a proud member of the Chief's Ceremonial Unit of the Toronto Police Services from its inception.  He was also a co-founder of the Josephian-Peterite Association of Canada and continued his love for cricket, rifle, pistol shooting and bowling.  He had a love for pastel drawing and oil painting as well.

Benito was a kind, humble and generous person, who always put the needs of others before his own.  His family and his grandchildren were the love of his life.

He was an amazing storyteller, who would recount fascinating stories from his past with great detail, entertaining his keen listeners.

He remains always in our hearts.  May his soul rest in peace, safe in the arms of Jesus, as he enjoys the eternal rewards of his heavenly home.

Respecting the current situation and pandemic restrictions, there will be no visitation.
