Obituary of Mr. James Athas

Dimitrios (James) Athanasakos (Athas) passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022 due to complications with double pneumonia at age 89.  He left us peacefully after a short stay in the hospital.

On October 27, 1932, James was born in Molaoi, Greece, to father Nikolaos and mother Alexandra.  James was one of five children who are now all reunited in Heaven.

James came to Canada in 1951 to start his new life.  He was re-introduced to Emily Pappas, who lived around the corner in Molaoi.  They soon married in 1956 in Toronto, Ontario.

James was known for his business acumen and his humour (a big practical joker).  Many people saw James as a strong-willed individual, but those who really knew him saw his generosity and his willingness to help others without any recognition.

He is survived by his wife Emily, his children, Nick and Sandra, his daughter-in-law Zoi and his grandchildren, Amalia, Alexia, and Dimitri.

A visitation will take place at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday, February 6, 2022, from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  The family will be there to welcome friends and relatives.

The funeral services will commence on Monday, February 7, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church 3840 Finch Avenue East, Scarborough, ON M1T 3T4; all are invited to attend.
