Obituary of Ms. Yali Zhang
Deepest Condolences on the Passing of Our Dearest Mother - Ms. Zhang Yali
Our mother, Zhang Yali, passed away on the evening of July 5th, 2026, in Toronto, Canada. She was 88 years old. Her passing has left us with immense grief and heartbreak. We so wished she could have lived longer in this world. But fate had other plans. Her life's journey has come to an end. We are comforted that she did not experience great pain in her final moments. She left so peacefully and calmly, as if she were asleep, heading towards heaven.
Our mother was an incredibly brave person. In the final stage of her life, despite facing many challenges and setbacks, she fought against her illness with unwavering willpower. Our mother had a strong will to live; all the medical staff said she was "tough as a rock." Her strength and courage helped her overcome many dangers, which we believe was because she longed to spend more time with her family in this world. Our mother was fortunate. At the end of her life, her two beloved children and her cherished grandson were always by her side, helping and encouraging her in her fight against illness.
My mother had the most beautiful and kind smile in the world. Her gaze was always firm yet gentle. Seeing her happy and smiling was our happiest time. Sometimes, my mother was like a cute child. She would spit out her medicine if she didn't like it. But she was also very understanding. When we told her that all the treatments were to help her get better faster, she would obediently nod, even with her arms full of needle marks from blood draws and IV drips, she gritted her teeth and endured it all, moving us healthy people deeply.
My mother possessed many traditional virtues. What best highlighted her personality was her selfless dedication and her humble and loving nature. My mother was the youngest of her sisters. I remember when we were little, my mother always told us the story of "Kong Rong Giving Up the Big Pear." At only four years old, Kong Rong, when dividing pears, voluntarily gave the largest pear to his brother, choosing only the smallest one for himself. Our mother always held herself to the same standard, always thinking of giving the best to others, even at her own expense, rather than troubling others. Her selflessness was also evident in her care for family and younger generations. When she was seventy years old, she traveled thousands of miles to the United States to help raise her newborn grandson, devoting herself wholeheartedly and working tirelessly. My mother was an introverted person. She wasn't eloquent, but she had a sincere heart. She often said she was like a thermos, cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Her relatives cared for her deeply, and her younger generations respected her greatly, all because of her kindness and sincerity.
My mother was very intelligent and eager to learn. She was full of artistic talent. She worked diligently in her research position for decades, shining brightly and serving as a model for modern women who balance career and life. After retiring, she channeled her love of music into new studies. She attended a senior university and taught herself piano and English. In her spare time, she loved to sit at her piano and play for long periods. She often improvised, playing beautiful melodies without sheet music. She was simply a genius. My mother didn't ask for much from life. Peace and happiness were her greatest satisfaction.
My mother spent the last thirteen years of her life in Canada. Her greatest wish was to one day return to her birthplace, Shanghai, China. Now, my mother can finally fulfill her wish. Soon she can return to the Shanghai she loves so much, to reunite with my father, her parents, and her sisters. May my mother's soul rest in peace. May she have a safe journey to heaven. We love you forever!
