Obituary of Mr. Uyanage Amarasiri de Silva
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our father and grandfather, Uyanage Amarasiri de Silva, who left us peacefully on Friday, March 27, at Rockcliffe Care Community, with his devoted wife of nearly 65 years by his side.
Born on December 1, 1930, in Sri Lanka, Amarasiri spent the early years of his adult life in Singapore, where he met and married his beloved wife, Betty. It was there that he began his family and built a distinguished career as a gemologist with Robinson’s Department Store. His work took him across Asia on numerous buying trips, where he selected exquisite pieces of jewelry for the store — always returning home with something special for his wife.
When he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease in his late forties, he made the decision to retire and return with his family to Sri Lanka to enjoy a quieter life.
Amarasiri will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Vimala (Betty); his children, Suneetha (Lalith) Gunasekera and Nalin (Ayoma) de Silva; and his cherished grandchildren, Bryan Gunasekera, Simone, and Hannah.
He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a wide circle of friends whose lives he touched.
Although his health had been steadily declining since the fall, we were blessed to celebrate his 95th birthday together on December 1, 2025 — a treasured memory for all who were there.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the PSWs and nursing team on the first floor at Rockcliffe Care Community, whose compassion, dignity, and care over the past three years meant so much.
