Han's passing has left an immense sorrow in all who knew her. She was always kind and thoughtful to me and everyone around us, while also being incredibly strong and hardworking.
I'll always remember the moments we shared at the university, as well as the fun outings with our lab mates, where we could all unwind and enjoy each other's company.
Han left us far too soon, but she will live on in our hearts, having inspired and touched the lives of so many. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.

Dear Han,
I can't believe our conversation is happening again under such situation. You are my best friend, and also my best friend's girlfriend. I still remember the "awkwardness" of our first meeting, the joy of you and Junran visiting Wuhan, and the fun we had playing Steam games together during COVID-19.
I am grateful for the advice and comfort you gave me as a friend during the most confusing time of my PhD. Throughout my doctoral studies, you were always the most charming person I aspired to catch up with. I regret not joining you all on the trip to Cancun. I still can’t believe her beautiful, kind eyes are closed forever. I will always remember her warmth, her friendliness, and how hard she worked. Although we met only a few times, she was one of those people who stays in your mind because of her positive personality.

Dear Han,
Last time we went to Ericsson in Kanata, you paid the taxi fare and told me it’s your turn next time. I had no idea that next time will never ever come in our life. You were an amazing person. I couldn’t go to Colorado to present my paper in conference. You presented mine instead. I wanted to treat you with Korean food. That also will never happen. You never said no to me. Despite being the best among us, you were always polite. I have never seen you talking to anyone without smiling. You got your doctorate, got your fancy job in the corporate, your boyfriend got a professor position — life was supposed to be great, superb, and amazing. But you left us.
My beloved Han, my labmate, my friend, you will be missed. Stay blessed always sweetheart.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Dr. Han Zhang. Not only was she an accomplished scientist, but a good friend and colleague. She made my journey of graduate school less intimidating and lonely. Whenever we'd meet up in person, we'd share our anxieties of having to publish our first papers or having enough material to graduate. It was comforting to have someone in the same boat as me. She was always available to lend a helping hand or a listening ear, and always with a smile. Thank you Han. It was an honour to have been your colleague and friend.

It was truly a pleasure to have known you, Han. You were brilliant, kind, and full of positivity, always ready to lend a helping hand. When we needed a volunteer to inspire young students in coding, you stepped forward without hesitation and led a wonderful session for second graders. You sparked curiosity in their young minds and answered their questions with patience and warmth.
Some of those children, especially the girls, looked up to you as a role model, and because of you, they may now dream of pursuing STEM fields with confidence.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Han’s family and loved ones. May her beautiful soul rest in peace and continue to shine light upon all who were lucky enough to know her.

I was fortunate to work with Han during the Hour of Code event in 2023. I remember how her energy and kindness filled the room; she had a way of making the children feel inspired and those around her feel supported. She gave so much of herself with kindness and patience, and it left a lasting impression on me.
I will always remember Han with gratitude for the light she brought into our community.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Han’s passing!
I had the chance to work with her briefly on one of her research projects during her time at the university, and I was always struck by her kindness, professionalism, and the positive energy she brought to everything she did. Han had a warm, genuine smile that lit up every conversation and made everyone around her feel comfortable and appreciated.
I still have the little panda keychain she gave us when we got together after the COVID — a memorable gift that perfectly reflected the warmth and kind spirit she brought into every space.
Her memory will stay with all of us who were lucky enough to know and work with her.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Han. I had the privilege of working with her during my postdoctoral time in the lab. She was so kind and bright, always with a smile, and I still remember how she brought a small gift for all of us in our first group meeting after COVID. I was one of the first professors to have Han in my class, and right from the start, she brought a presence you noticed right away. She was sharp, driven, and full of curiosity. As one of our first Vector Scholars, she approached every challenge with determination. Her thesis defence this past August was a proud and well-earned milestone.
Han was also a founding member of the ACM-Women in Computing chapter at uOttawa. That reflected her deep belief in building community and supporting others. She showed that same spirit beyond the classroom, joining us in many events in Kanata North and always arriving with energy and a sense of purpose.
I still remember when she joined Melike and me at a conference in Denver in 2024. She was so excited to be there, and was asking thoughtful questions, connecting with people, and taking in every moment. That kind of enthusiasm was simply who she was. She brought warmth and light into every space she entered.
Han left a a legacy of kindness and excellence on her peers, on our community, and on those of us who had the privilege of knowing her.
Han, you will always be remembered...

I am deeply saddened by Han’s passing. It has been incredibly hard to process this loss.

I feel so lucky to have met you, Han. The very first time we met at ACM Women. We were grouped together in another event and I could see how kind and cheerful you were. Every time I saw you, you were always smiling, always spreading positivity, and lifting everyone’s spirits.
I will miss you and all of your beautiful smiles. I still remember our last conversation. You were so excited about your graduation and starting your new job. I really wish we had the chance to meet again and talk about your new journey and experiences.

I met Han for the first time at one of the events of ACM-Women uOttawa Student Chapter. I remember her helping us in organizing the events, having fun, and showcasing her passion to everyone around her. She was a kind soul, always cheerful, and had cherished every moment with us.
I had the pleasure of meeting her again at other events and had a friendly chat with her, which made me realize how genuine her heart was towards everyone. I will miss you, Han! Han was a wonderful student in many ways. She did all her work with utmost care. Her papers, thesis, her work as an assistant in my course… she always made things to perfection.
She was one of my most brilliant students. But above and beyond, she always had a big smile and positive attitude. She was a very kind and a very honest child. She loved to help others.
I remember how excited we would get when she had a new idea. She would work on these ideas and most difficult problems and solve them with great ambition. That way, she had many great achievements. Her papers are well-known by many and her thesis is nominated for awards. Her work is always admired by others.
I will always be proud of you, Han. I consider myself lucky to have such an amazing student under my supervision.
I also know Han created a very positive environment for her lab mates and friends. She was loved by all of us and she will be remembered forever.

One of my favorite memories is our gathering at MacLaren’s Sports Bar in June 2023. We had a wonderful night together as friends and colleagues from uOttawa, simply enjoying each other’s company. Han’s bright smile lit up the table. Han wasn’t just a labmat, she was a kind, thoughtful friend, and we were lucky to have her in the Netcore Lab. We will carry her spirit with us and keep her memory alive in our work and in our hearts. I wish I could have seen your dreams come true and watched you achieve your goals.

It was such a special moment when Han and Junran appeared at my house two new years ago to meet our son Poyraz when he was just a few weeks old. They were some of the first people to meet him. As Junran wrapped up his PhD this summer, Han became a regular face at McMaster. I was always happy to see her there next to my office working with Junran (and in the background of virtual meetings with Junran throughout the years). Our last great moment together was celebrating Junran's defense in July - Han met the whole research group and we all had a great time sharing stories and getting to know each other better. Since I have known Junran I have always known how important Han was to him. He was regularly traveling to Ottawa to see Han (and her roommate's tiny white dog), and he liked sharing the story about how they met and their plans for the future. It is tragic to lose someone so young and with so much in her future as Han, her being gone leaves a hole in many people's hearts.
