Although I didn’t know Mr. Ernie personally, I know that he and his daughter Dimitra shared a special relationship. My heart goes out to her and the family after his passing. I know the memories they created will last forever.

Ernie Lee is our cousin his mother was born in Holland, we called her: tante Henny (aunt Henny).
Aunt Henny had two sisters in Holland, a younger sister called Aunt Riekje and an older sister called Aunt Alie, this is my (Lisa) mother.
We live out in the country of Friesland in The Netherlands nearby Joure a small village which is very famous for their annual balloon festival
Ernie Lee was a well-known balloon captain in Europe and he trained several aspiring pilots. Herman Kleinsmit was one of them, he became later the chairman of the balloon festival.
Around 1988 Ernie stayed at our farmhouse during the festival.
He even arranged a flight near our house for friends & family
We had several fantastic balloon flights with him. Even once over Toronto!
His family in Holland will remember Ernie as a very generous friendly man with a kind & free spirit. We have many good memories of Ernie.
We wish Dimitra and our family in Canada all the strength they need in this difficult time of loss.

Dearest Dimetra, Margret, Cliff, Linda and all the friends and other family.
With much sadness, I heard the news of Ernie's passing away on August 2nd, 2025 .
As a young woman a young girl, he was my favorite cousin , all the way back in Canada.
I also have lovely memories of my cousin from when he was in the Netherlands flying his balloon, more aware that we were good friends now. Now the first time I ever flew in a balloon with him was 36 years ago but he came many times to the Netherlands and we were very connected. I also loved my Aunt Henny, his mother and my uncle Ernie, his sister Margret and Cliff his brother and of course his daughter Dimitra. I came to Toronto a couple of times where Ernie showed me how lovely Canada and Toronto were and lots of places around where he lived.
when he lived in the Netherlands we were followers of his balloon party and we showed him things to see in our country. Driving around in his car here, very special! And showing him boats in which he could travel through the Netherland with tourists an bikes
We and my family loved Ernie very much. After our children were born we kept following him on Facebook. It was a great man. Lovingly...Friendly...going all over the world.
The last 10 years he and I only met on the internet but my friendship always stayed and my love for this sweet man never faded.
I hope you are with all your loved ones now, flying to through the sky forever!

Q: What was one of the qualities of Mr. Ernie that you loved most?
A: Ernie was a true gentleman. Always kind , gentle, and eager to help anyone . One of the highlights of our lives was the balloon ride we had with him years ago. Although we're not risk takers, we felt safe with Ernie as pilot.
We will miss Ernie and send sincere condolences to his family.

Remembering a Gentle Soul
A gentle soul has left this world. He had a way of brightening every day with a smile, a kind word, and a helping hand. His gentle spirit touched my heart and the hearts of my sons in ways we will never forget. Though he is gone, his warmth and extreme kindness will remain with us always.

Ernie often came to Springdale Spiritualist Church for an uplifting message. He often came in later just in the nick of time for messages. He drove the small red classic jaguar the last time he visited. He also drove the yellow classic car and a newer light blue jaguar. One of the church persons said he called one car his girl friend and one car his wife. He would sit at the front often so he could hear properly with his hearing aids. He was a welcome audience member and was greeted by name. He really enjoyed getting a message in the church.

When I was just a young child. Ernie was a friend of my uncle Billy. We went up in the balloon together. I was terrified but have always wanted to go up again. He was around here or there at our house but always remember him being a very kind gentle man

Ernie and I were friends for almost 30 years. We enjoyed driving out of town in one of Ernie's fancy cars, or going to pubs for beer and chicken wings. Ernie loved coming to my BBQ parties and connecting with old friends or making new friends. It was easy for Ernie to make friends.
Everybody liked him.
Ernie and I shared the love for animals, specially cats. Ernie's last cat had a happy life with Ernie for 20 years.
He tried to make a difference in this world, always willing and eager to help.
I miss you my dear friend. May your gentle and kind soul RIP.

Q: How would you describe Mr. Ernie to someone who had never met them?
A: I met Ernie through our 'Chick-n-Burger' friends in the late 1960s. He often demonstrated his compassion, kindness, and love for his family and friends. On many occasions, he went the extra mile to keep in touch with us all. I remember once searching with him for a mutual friend, Steve C, who was struggling in life, to reach out to him. We found out where he lived and that he drove a taxi, but we never did connect. Ernie introduced me to karaoke in the 1990s. We had lots of fun singing around Scarborough and Toronto with other karaoke singers. Although I am sorry to hear of his passing, I am glad that the Lord has another amazing angel keeping watch over us all from above.

Ernie's obituary captured his true nature/spirit. We met him through my s-i-l Maria and always enjoyed his company.Ernie was a true gentleman,always pleasant,caring and helpful.He was good company and always entertaining with many stories from his varied and wide work experience. The first time I met my cousin Ernie was in Toronto 1981. A young man, with the looks of George Harrison, showing his Jaguar to my mother. Years later he came to Holland to fly the balloon. One of the nicest men I ever met.

My friend Douglas Spencer introduced us to Ernie on December 2012 for a Christmas party. He had quite the stach on him.
Ernie was quickly accepted into The Gang, a loving group of long time friends. He joined us in almost every activities, mostly dancing to a live band. We had a blast!
He did take our advice and dish the stach.
We promised him the women would be hanging onto him like a lost kittens.
Ernie and I had a few things in common, we both loved to keep our friends close, and a lover of animals; him cats and me dogs.
No matter what, Ernie was there for his family and friends in times of need. It didn't matter what time or where. He would be there.
Thank you my friend for being there for me through the ups and downs. Thank you for dropping by and putting a smile on my mother's face. Thank you for helping out with Tammy, my sister-in-law, in her last months on earth. Thank you for loving and understanding my sister Maria and taking her for rides on your fancy cars and motorcycle.
Thank you for being a friend.
I will miss you terribly.
Say hi to Mom and Tammy for me.

Ernie didn't separate play from work very well. That. and he never showed up on time to parties and events...an idiosyncrasy which was tolerated by his loving friends.
Shown below helping a friend erect a steel structure an hour's drive from home.
He was a complete person, humble, empathetic, keenly interested in his friends' well being. Sorely miss you mate.
