To the Family of my dear deceased cousin, I send love and God’s Blessings.
Ansel, as the family called him, was a treasure. He was easy going and reflected love and peace among us cousins; and there was a lot of us.
As children we would gather at Christmas and summer holidays in Kingston, during the week. Both my brother George, and cousins Dins, went to their eternal rest before. Valerie, Ansel and I spent a lot of time on Orange Street. It seemed like our family, the Spences, had many stores on Orange Street in those days, George and I would walk from one uncle’s store to the other. We were the cousins that came to “Towne” form the Country, yes the country cousins from Savanna-la-mar (smile). Dins Ansel and Valerie were the Kingston gang.
After leaving High School, we all went our various ways, I went to New York. However, page forward when Ansel and I reunited by phone some forty years later it felt just like the day before. Whenever we called each other, we would chat for over an hour. We spoke about our youth, family members, our traditions, politics and world affairs. Just listening to him I could always hear a smile in his voice, one of peace.
I mostly admired my cousin for the way he was so positive, handling his sickness and pain with such grace. I would tell him that I was so amazed by his positive attitude, looking at the glass half full, which I do too, gave me more purpose. I could go on and on, but you all who knew him knew of all his attributes.
My CUZ, yes you fought a very long courageous fight, rest in Peace in our Saviour’s Arms.
